Databases as artistic source material

Archival Consciousness

REMIX Fest kicks off with the keynote artist talk by Archival Consciousness about data as artistic source material. Entire digital collections are hidden behind a search box. How can we engage with bodies of knowledge that we cannot see? In the keynote artist Mariana Lanari and graphic designer Remco van Bladel will share their hybrid archiving methods, using site-specific installation to decompose, reinterpret and perform algorithms to redefine ontologies, draw models, and re-imagine our digital environment.

Moot Court

Maartje Hülsenbeck

During this masterclass given by one of the legal experts of Sound & Vision, you will learn the basics of copyright law. These will help you recognise at an early stage of your work or project that you are dealing with copyright. Topics such as public domain, portrait rights and right to quote are covered. On citation law, we reenact a real-life court case in the Moot Court: Right to Quote.

Typologies of Delusion

Pablo Núñez Palma

At REMIX Fest experimental filmmaker Pablo Núñez Palma talks about ‘Typologies of Delusion’ that forms part of the ongoing research conducted by him and creative developer Ignacio Rojas. Can Artificial Intelligence help artists access the unconscious mind of a film archive? Fascinated by the world portrayed the Dutch weekly newsreel Polygoon, they trained a series of neural networks based on Polygoon’s imagery. Then, like oracles from another time, they posed profound questions: what does beauty look like? What is violence?

Rabea Ridlhammer

Rabea Ridlhammer of Gerrit Rietveld Academie’s monthly TV show (broadcasted on AT5) guides a curatorial team of 4 students from different departments. They invite alumni to create 8 RietveldTV episodes. At REMIX Fest Ridlhammer and event’s programmer Kris Petrasova will introduce the new collaboration of RietveldTV with Sound & Vision.

Archiving for Artists

Wineke Gartz & Amy Welten

Wineke Gartz creates site-specific installations that consist of complex overlays of imagery and mixed media. For publications she needs a comprehensive overview of her past work. In this workshop she and Sound & Visions Amy Welten will teach you about the challenges of keeping, selecting and archiving their work through the lens of the artists’ needs and professional archive’s solutions and advice.

Touchy Subject

Podiumkunst.net & Studio Immersief

Making work about a sensitive subject, what impact does that have on the creative process? Subjects on which opinions are divided, or which deal with painful histories. Participants in this workshop explore together with producer Danny van Zuijlen of Studio Immersief what impact a sensitive subject has on/within the production process. From choosing the archive material (potential triggers), drawing up risk analyzes to collaborating with archive institutions. The participants also work on a concept for an immersive experience based on archive material. This workshop is a collaboration with Podiumkunst.net.

Analog Film Workshop

Onno Petersen & Erik Wesselo

Analog film, what does it look like, how does it feel and what can you do with it? Specialist in analogue cinematography Onno Petersen and conceptual artist Erik Wesselo let you experience what analogue film is exactly. They bring rolls of Super 8 film shot by amateurs and let you make a new montage in Super 8 edit sets by cutting and pasting. Of course with a screening on a Super 8 projector.

How to be an artist in the digital age?

Open Culture Tech

In this knowledge session about Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Avatar technology Open Culture Tech shares knowledge, experience, and resources that musicians can use immediately in their live performances. They will open up the floor for a lively discussion about the practical potentials of the project. How can we make it usable? How do we incorporate existing materials into the performances? A session for artists looking to elevate their performances and students looking to learn about these unique technology applications.

Artist Talk: Absent Statue

Jaya Pelupessy

Translating archival images into spatial, sculptural installations that investigate local and global power structures. That is where the project ‘Absent Statue’ is about. Moments in which "power" is literally moved - statues hanging in the cables - and in which the meaning of these statues is shifted. During the artist talk Jaya Pelupessy takes you along on its research and shares his insight regarding the translation and making use of archival materials in his own art practice.

Reflections on water (it happened tomorrow)

Visual Methodologies Collective & Rasa Bočytė

“The climate crisis is also a crisis of the imagination” argues author Amitav Ghosh urging for the incorporation of climate change in cultural and artistic work. The process of imagining future climate change is a prerequisite for accepting change, whether in personal life or in far-reaching policy changes. The workshop explores how historical audiovisual collections can help us to imagine our lives and our surroundings affected by the rising sea levels. The starting point will be a collection of still images from short films, documentaries, and news reports from the Sound & Vision collection. Visual Methodologies Collective

On absences and presences in the archives

Expanding on Saidiya Hartman’s term ‘critical fabulation’ as a method, we will explore how we can approach absences within an archive, ethics of working with archival imagery, responsibility of the maker, distance and proximity, contextualization of the imagery, as well as found image vs archival image. What methodologies are possible to open up the archival images for further interpretation? What does it mean to contextualize archival images that are in an institutional archive? In this workshop example works will be explored as well as hands-on exercises with the use of images from the Open Beelden image archive. (Bring your headphones and laptops to edit the images!)

Experience for yourself how you can access the enormous archive of Sound & Vision via the DAAN portal. Two experienced Sound & Vision employees will help you on your way.

15:15 - 15.45h

Behind the scenes tour - Digitizing department 

We will take you where the public never goes. A special look at the scanners of Sound & Vision where analog film material is converted into digital files. Experts explain why 16mm film is so important for our collection, how different analog film formats are made available digitally and show you footage from the early days.

SHOWCASES

10:00 - 17:00h

Collections Sound & Vision 

So many amazing projects to explore during REMIX Fest, but what about the collection of Sound & Vision? We thought of that and invited our researchers to curate a special selection of our archive material that is available to artists to use that will blow your mind. On the big screen in the Atrium we will show a loop of our gems of audiovisual archive. Researcher Erik Lucassen will introduce the showcase during lunch.

10:00 - 20:00h

THE VOID

We have invited the creators of THE VOID to add a live talk show element to REMIX Fest. THE VOID’s popup studio proposes to reframe streaming as a collective video event. Video is then no longer a thing, an object to produce, distribute, and archive. Instead, we will invite speakers at REMIX Fest to participate in the video as a collective act of simultaneous shooting, editing, distributing and archiving all together.

CampusDoc

During REMIX Fest we will show the three winning productions of the Sound & Vision Award for Best Film, Best Directing and Best Cinematography at the recent CampusDoc International Film Festival in Utrecht. CampusDoc is a documentary film minor of the School of Journalism at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.

ANTIWARCOALITION.ART

ANTIWARCOALITION.ART is an open online platform that collects, shares and distributes statements against war created by artists from all over the world. As an archive it provides great opportunities for research. One of the founders will tell you more about this initiative.

REMIX Fest will close this long day full of learning, experiences and inspiration with drinks and Moldavian-born DJ NYMPHO playing her italo, disco and electro on vinyl.
