Programme

The Winter School is about providing practical knowledge: we start with the basis for digital preservation of audiovisual materials and finish with mapping participants' own insights and policy on conserving them. Topics we will discuss during the  Winter School include:

  • Risks for digital durability,
  • Applying OAIS model for audiovisual collections,
  • Digital preservation planning,
  • Ingest & acquisition,
  • File formats & data management,
  • Data storage and migration.

The training will be alternated with short, educational visits to Sound & Vision's storage and digitisation facilities. Situated in the heart of the Dutch broadcast environment, Sound & Vision features a state-of-the-art in-house infrastructure which will be demonstrated in detail. Also, there will be ample time to get to know the other participants of the versatile group of national and international Winter School participants. The second day of training will be followed by a dinner for all participants in Hilversum's city centre.

Webinars

The presentations by the three guest speakers could be followed by everyone via a live streamed webinar. Our guest speakers gave insight into how their organisations - with a wide variety of audiovisual collections - deal with specific preservation challenges. This year's guest speakers were Bojan Kosi (RTV Slovenija's Mediateka), Eva Verdoodt (VIAA) and Anne Gant (EYE Filmmuseum).

Bojan Kosi (RTV Slovenija's Mediateka)

Bojan Kosi talked about AV digitization projects in Mediateka at RTV Slovenija, including planning, managing workflows, media formats for long-term preservation and metadata.

Eva Verdoodt (VIAA)

Eva Verdoodt gave an insight into how VIAA handles sustainable durability. The focus of her presentation was scalability, transparency and controlling processes and the underlying systems.

Anne Gant (EYE Filmmuseum)

Anne Gant presented EYE Filmmuseum’s current strategies for archiving digital films, including some observations, anecdotes, cautionary tales and advice.
