Over the past half century, Europe has built a single market where goods, services, capital and people can circulate freely within the borders of the European Union. The latest development for the single European market is the rise of AI and digital exchange. As this rise has a great impact on most sectors, it also affects the media sector specifically. Considering the rapid developments in AI and digitalization, it is important that we encourage cooperation in Europe around data and data management, and also keep control over the exchange of data.

TEMS is an initiative that aims to facilitate the developments and challenges within the European single digital market by creating one central tool for data management. The media data space will enable various players in the EU media ecosystem, including audiovisual archives like Sound & Vision, to more easily exchange their content with each other and explore further valuable applications.

What TEMS does

The initiative is funded by the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union. With 42 organisations from 12 countries, the consortium represents hundreds of stakeholders in the cultural and creative sector. The consortium aims to strengthen the economic development and future growth of local and regional media ecosystems and data space infrastructures across Europe. TEMS seeks to achieve this through large-scale implementation of advanced data services.

From now to 2026, the project focuses on implementing eight trials that will explore specific themes in the media sector. These trials include an exchange platform for sharing news content produced by certified fact-checkers, safeguarding userdata and personalised advertising, a co-creation place for virtual production and the development of better metadata models.

The main goal is to drive digital transformation and strengthen the competitiveness of the European media industry. In doing so, TEMS makes a significant contribution to the implementation of the European data strategy.

Role of Sound & Vision

Sound & Vision as a Dutch partner and institute for media and cultural heritage plays a crucial role within this initiative. To support the project, Sound & Vision has the essential knowledge and experience from developing the European cultural heritage data space managed by the Europeana Foundation. Sound & Vision shares this knowledge not only within the innovative ecosystem of TEMS, but also with a wider audience in the form of workshops and other freely accessible events.

Sound & Vision is in a unique position to initiate cross-sectoral collaborations, specifically for the cultural creative industries. Not only can Sound & Vision contribute to the development of new (AI) applications that facilitate data processing, it can also stimulate an active network around the TEMS 'data space'. In doing so, the TEMS data space becomes a place to create and share data knowledge with others. To this end, TEMS offers a wide range of new tools, products and expertise.
